Standard
Bank was formed in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1862 and
was initially known as “The Standard Bank of British South Africa”
In the 1870’s with the gold finds in the Zuid-Afrikaansche
Republiek (Eastern Transvaal) it became prudent to remove the
‘British’ from the Bank’s name, and in 1883 the Bank became
formally known as ‘The Standard Bank of South Africa’, a name
that has remained the same for over 130 years.
Throughout the 1890’s Standard Bank consolidated its position
as the leading bank in Southern Africa. During apartheid the
South African economy suffered, but after the last decade of
hard work and significant change, I am proud to be able to say
that Standard Bank is a leading force in Africa, as the country
celebrates it’s “Ten Years of Democracy”. In 2004 Euro Money
voted Standard Bank the number one bank in Sub-Saharan Africa,
placing it above well-known brands such as Barclays Bank and
Standard Chartered.
In South Africa, Standard Bank is a household name, employing
over 39,000 people and recognised as the leading financial services
brand. For those cricket aficionados Standard Bank sponsors
one-day cricket in South Africa and we are proud to see our
brand displayed on the shirts of the national side.
Standard Bank now has a presence in over 38 countries worldwide,
providing access to an international network that meets the
needs of a diverse client base.
Award Winning
After the relaxation of sanctions in 1992 Standard Bank quickly
established itself as a leader in emerging market finance and
in 2004, the Banker Magazine voted Standard Bank, ‘Emerging
Market Bank of the Year’.
Not to be outdone by its larger parent, Standard Bank Offshore,
(the banking, asset management, fiduciary and fund administration
businesses across Jersey, the Isle of Man and Mauritius), also
won awards in 2004, notably the Portfolio International Award
for ‘Best International Banking Product’. The product that attracted
this accolade was the Offshore Expatriate Savings Account, a
unique account paying exceptionally high interest rates, giving
the flexibility of instant access and the returns of a 90-day
notice account. Winning the award for ‘Best Expatriate Bank’
in the Investment International Offshore Finance Awards in 2005
reinforced the merits of this account.
